For those who aren’t yet familiar with Salem Shuffle, it is a fundraising fun run with other activities promoting health. Did you know each of the dollars you donate at Salem Shuffle goes straight into PTA programs at Enders-Salk? Yes, 100%! This is where your dollars make the most difference, and it makes a huge difference to our PTA and what we can do. Look for donation and volunteer forms for this event coming home in backpacks.

During Harvest Day celebrations at Enders-Salk Elementary, students visited the school garden to check out the vegetables and herbs they had planted in the spring! This included broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, asparagus and chives. They also learned about vegetables and fruits that weren’t in their garden, such as parsnips, yucca and ginger root. The Garden Club is sponsored by teachers Cindy Chin and Cyndee Jackowski.

District 54 is hosting its annual Run to Read, which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017 at Dirksen Elementary School in Schaumburg. The day includes school mascot races at 7:30 a.m., 100-yard and 400-yard dashes for children at 8 a.m., a 5K run at 8:45 a.m. and a 1-mile family walk at 9 a.m. Although you can register at any time, even the morning of the race, you will save $5 and be guaranteed a Tshirt in the size you requested if you register by Sept. 1. The Run to Read is an awesome opportunity to promote healthy living by encouraging your children to exercise, or even better, by joining them on the walk or run. The event also supports our goal of collecting 1,000 children’s books for every classroom in District 54. To register, visit http://sd54.org/runtoread.
District 54 is aware that the first day of school for most of our students, Monday – August 21, is the day of the solar eclipse. During a total solar eclipse the moon lines up with the sun, blocking the sun from view. Our community is not on the path of totality (the closest area is Carbondale, Illinois), which means those in the District 54 community would only see a partial eclipse (the moon will not fully cover the sun). The partial eclipse will be viewable in our area from 11:53 a.m. to 2:41 p.m.
Looking directly at the sun is never safe and it would be impossible for staff to ensure that children are not watching the changes in the sky that occur with even a partial eclipse. Therefore, we will be keeping students inside for recess and lunch on August 21. Students will have the opportunity to view the eclipse through NASA’s website at https://www.nasa.gov/eclipselive. Some parents have expressed a desire to keep their students home and travel to see the eclipse. Parents have the right to make this decision for their children and we will be happy to welcome their students on August 22.
